tasting bars.
Several wineries, such as 45
North Vineyard and Winery in Lake Leelanau, even have bike tools and tire pumps available, in case you need them.
“We couldn’t be happier to host bike tasting tours at the winery,” shares Alanna Grossnickle, manag- er of 45 North. “We are big support- ers of staying active and incorporat- ing the outdoors into wine and wine tastings. Northern Michigan is unbelievably beautiful and to expe- rience the wine trail via bicycling is such a cool way to soak up the scenery and taste the local wines. Bike, wine taste, a packed picnic on the deck surrounded by vines and rolling hills... I can’t think of a nicer way to spend an afternoon on Leelanau Peninsula.”
The winery also provides the 45 North Vineyard Trail, a 3-mile, all seasons recreational trail through scenic vineyards that guests can explore by bike, on skis or on foot.
You don’t have to be in perfect shape or a skilled cyclist to bike
through wine country. Just be sure to follow a plan that suits your abilities. If you already have a bike, you could just head out with a wine trail map and pedal away. Just be sure to plan your tour by selecting the number of wineries, maybe three to six, and the terrain that you can comfortably handle. Then enjoy a splendid afternoon in Leelanau’s
beautiful wine country.
If you need a bike, local rental
companies can gear you up with all of your equipment needs. Crystal River Out tters in Glen Arbor offers a comfort bike for $35 per day, which includes a helmet, lock and delivery. Suttons Bay Bikes offers bike rentals at $36 per day including helmets, maps, locks and roadside assistance. Self-Guided Wine Tours are also offered Suttons Bay Bikes.
Whether you choose to bike on your own or go with a tour, you’re sure to have a great time peddling M-22 and the back roads of Leelanau County.
And don’t forget a backpack for your new favorite wine.
