A duffer can be forgiven for whif ng at the tee box in Leelanau County.
There’s just so much to look at other than a little
white ball. The
county’s six public
courses offer a variety of scenic
views and challenges.
And the newest course,
Northport Creek, carries an added bene t of
being green in more ways than providing a healthy fairway.
Northport Creek Golf Course generates almost all of the power it needs from solar panels, but course itself is worth a trip to Northport, Chris McCann says.
“We constantly hear from people that they enjoy the course,” said McCann, who has been manager since the course opened in July 2014.
Leelanau’s rolling, rustic terrain is de nitely golf friendly. Start swinging here:
Dunes Golf Club
Casual. Friendly. Relaxing. That’s how they describe this 5,730- yard, 18-hole playground near Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. (6464 W. Empire Highway, Empire; 326-5390)
Mountain Flowers
You’ll see everything (except maybe Wisconsin) from this 9-hole, par-3 course at The Homestead Resort: Lake Michigan, the Glen lakes, the dunes, and the Manitou and Fox Islands. (Wood Ridge Road, Glen Arbor; 334-5000)
Manitou Passage
This 6,668-yard, Arnold Palmer- designed course wraps around Sugar Loaf Mountain, cuts through hardwoods and features dramatic elevation changes (translation: very hilly). Not easy. (4600 Club Drive, Cedar; 228-6000)
Bahle Farms
Putt your way through cherry orchards, woods and hills at this relatively new 6,651-yard, par-71 course located three miles south
of Suttons Bay. From greens, you’ll see the village as well as West Grand Traverse Bay. (9505 Otto Road, Suttons Bay; 271-2020)
Northport Creek
Designed by noted Michigan golf architect Jerry Matthews, the 3,000-yard 9-holer focuses on the natural, using the contours and beauty of old farm land to suggest the placement of the
holes and the  ow of the course. (355 West 8th Street, Northport; 386-1088)
Sugar Loaf The Old Course
This par-72, 6,787-yard course has been a local favorite for more than four decades and features peek-a-boo glimpses of Lake Michigan in a setting  lled with mature northern Michigan hardwoods. (4512 South Townline Road, Cedar; 228-2040)
