transport boat whose main duty had been delivering mail to and from South Manitou Island. The ship, described
in the article as a “salvage vessel,” and crew were returning from the island when its diesel engine conked out.
George Grosvenor and Bill Carlson, whose families remain owners of Manitou Island
Transit and Carlson’s Fishery in Fishtown, saw warning ares and identi ed that the vessel was in trouble and joined other captains in the harbor in pulling off the rescue. They ran into trouble, however, when towing the disabled craft through the narrow harbor entrance in heavy seas after dark.
The coverage states: “‘This is proof that we need a new harbor,’ was the unanimous
opinion voiced by George Gosvenor, Louis Steffens, Peter Carlson and his son Bill after Tuesday night’s dramatic rescue of the Smiling Thu. ‘We would have had little trouble.’”
Like the drive by Congress
to establish Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, however, identifying the need and coming up with funding remained different subjects until work began in 1967. Leland Township paid $15,000 toward the multi-million project, mostly through private pledges.
The harbor area was improved again through
a $3.2 million project that began in 2008 and included the multi-vehicle boat ramp, harbor building and public bathrooms. The popular sunset- viewing platform above the bathrooms was part of the project.
