The heart of recreation in the Glen Arbor area is also good for your heart — a kids’ and adult playground that includes pickleball and tennis courts.
In fact, Glen Arbor has become known for its rousting tennis competition that includes a community-wide tournament held in the days before the Fourth of July. Former Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Betty
Weaver, who died in 2016, was always an entrant.
But how does such a community tradition get its start? In the case of the Glen Arbor Township tennis courts, it was through an extensive volunteer base that continues today as well as a benefactor whose footprint was left throughout southwestern Leelanau County.
The  rst tennis court on what was described in the July 17, 1952, Leelanau Enterprise as the “new park at Glen Arbor” was built through volunteer labor with funds donated by Pierce Stocking.
