A part of Leelanau County history — and a cool-looking structure — was almost lost when county commissioners
had only misinformation to guide them when deciding the fate of what is known today as the “4-H Barn.”
The barn was thought to
be lacking in local lore, as members of the County Board of Commissioners were told it was assembled in 1911 from a Montgomery Ward kit. So when the structure was deemed unsafe, commissioners sought bids to raze it. Only one rm was interested — for a price tag of $63,300.
That was in 2016. Now the keys to the barn, which is located on county-owned property across from Myles Kimmerly park west of Maple City on County Road 616, have been turned over to a non-pro t formed by barn af ciandos who rose to the barn’s defense.
