barn burned in 1911. The current barn was replaced by craftsman John Schettek, who built many barns still standing and in use at Cedar and Maple City farms.
James Schettek never knew his grandfather, but like him makes a living building things. Schettek and his business partner own David Webster Construction. He gures that wood for the county barn was cut from nearby forests.
“They would have cut from local properties and milled,” James said in an interview with the Leelanau Enterprise.
The Schetteks were typical
of Bohemian and Polish immigrants who settled the mid-section of Leelanau County — hard-working families who came to America for a new chance on life.
“He died at a fairly young age, in his 40s. He built many of that style barns in the area. And he was the head carpenter or foreman back when they built the Isadore (Holy Rosary) church ... that’s how I know he was a good carpenter,” James said.
The nonpro t, called the Leelanau County Historic Presentation Society, is accepting donations to repair the barn, which could cost more than $100,000.
