as the camera operator runs down the dune. Be sure the have the sound “on,” because lots of hoots and hollers are sure to be heard.
Visitors who return year after year get a new look. Shoreline winds are constantly moving the sand, with the dune climb itself moving a few feet each year toward the parking lot.

Pierce Stocking stop #9 Lake Michigan Overlook
Pretty as a postcard —
and the view has been one several times over — this stop includes a wooden plank deck overlooking the aquamarine and deep blues of Lake Michigan. Once at the end
of the deck, a sel e makes a picture so lovely you may need to frame it.
You’re cheating yourself, though, by limiting Pierce Stocking sel es to one
overlook. The entire drive is 7.4 miles, and it includes 12 stops found between Glen Arbor and Empire. An observation deck was built 450 feet over the Lake Michigan shoreline.
The road itself was completed about 45 years ago. It took the men working on the project about seven years to complete.
After all these years Hickok still visits Pierce Stocking. “Even my friends that come up every year never tire of it. Neither do I,” she said.
Pierce Stocking, whom
the drive was named for, was an actual person. He was a lumberman and had experience building roads. As he discovered the beauty of the Sleeping Bear area, he decided to share it with others by creating this lovely drive. Stocking operated the drive until his death in 1976; the federal government took ownership the following year.
Park Service engineers and interpretors studied the layout of the road in an attempt to recommend improvements. They couldn’t.
