Overtime heroics propel Suttons Bay past Lake Leelanau St. Mary 77-70 last week.
The Norsemen went into halftime up 39-37 during the highscoring affair Thursday.
St. Mary took a 46-43 lead out of the locker room and went into the fourth quarter up 53-48. The Eagles led 61-60 with three minutes left as both teams traded free throws to head into overtime.
Suttons Bay had a chance to win the game in regulation but missed two free throws with less than five seconds remaining. The Norsemen wouldn’t miss another opportunity in overtime as Suttons Bay outscored St. Mary 11-4 in the final frame.
The Norsemen had five players in double figures: Grayson Opie 20 points; Lucas Gordon 14 points; Urijah TwoCrow 13 points; Finn Mankowski 11 points; Tyler Porter 10 points; Austin Vang 9 points.
St. Mary senior Jerry Schaub led all scorers with 24 points. Eagle sophomores Josh Bunek and Oliver Mitchell had 17 and 10 points, respectively. Eli Kelenske, Luke Gallagher, and Cody Couturier combined for 14 points.
Benzie crowned NWC Champs The Huskies defeated the Lakers 41-39 in a NWC conference game as Benzie clinched the 2023-24 boys basketball title.
Benzie jumped out to a 20-6 lead in the second quarter before Glen Lake made a run to cut into the Huskies’ lead 20-14. A series of turnovers benefitted the Lakers at the end of the second quarter to go into halftime 25-19.
Glen Lake caught fire in the third quarter and took the lead 26-25.
Both teams traded big 3-pointers in the fourth quarter as the score remained tied 38-38 with less than a minute remaining. After Glen Lake made a free throw by sophomore Jacob Plamondon (39-38), Benzie forward Jason Childers scored a put-back basket to seal the victory and conference championship. Rowan Zickert led the Huskies with 12 points; Childers with 11 points; Andrew Gray with 7 points; Grayson Converse with 8 points.
Palmondon led the Lakers with 13 points; Cooper Bufalini with 9 points; Benji Allen with 7 points; Michael Houtteman with 6 points; Tyler Bixby with 4 points.
Lakers bounce back
Glen Lake bounced back after a conference championship loss to Benzie last week with a 77-46 win over Suttons Bay.
Plamondon had another dominant game with 21 points, 10 rebounds, followed by Benji Allen with 17 points, 9 rebounds; Colebrook Sutherland 11 points; Cooper Bufalini 9 points.
Suttons Bay guard Grayson Opie led with 16 points, 7 rebounds; Urijah TwoCrow 13 points, 6 assists; Lucas Gordon 8 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals.
Tournament time approaching Glen Lake will host District 107 starting on Monday as the Lakers, Suttons Bay, Leland, Lake Leelanau St. Mary, Frankfort, Grand Traverse Academy and TC Christian all battle for the district title and the right to move onto regionals. Leland will battle St. Mary, before TC Christian and Frankfort play with both games happening at Leland on Monday, February 26. The winners will play each other on Wednesday, Feb. 28 at Glen Lake.
On the other side of the bracket, Suttons Bay will play Grand Traverse Academy on Monday for the right to play No. 1-seed Glen Lake in the semifinals on Wednesday.
