Glen Lake middle school wrestlers competed in the first home meet of the season and program history on Tuesday against Kingsley and another team.

The Lakers went 10-7 overall with 11 of those matches getting the first take down, and garnishing 10 pins in the process. “I would say they performed very well considering a lot are new to the sport,” Glen Lake middle school coach Ethan Smith said. “They did a great job with not being overwhelmed by the environment.” This was the first of three dual meets Glen Lake will host this season as the middle schoolers wrestle again next Tuesday. Tuesday marked the first middle school wrestling match since 2001. As the high school program ended its first season since 2001, Smith is focused on developing the fundamentals into his middle school wrestlers.

“You can’t have gaps at any level .... It comes very difficult if you don’t have the fundamentals,” Smith said. “We talk about program alignment and we are preaching the same philosophy (youth through high school). We have fantastic parents and great support from the community.”

Glen Lake’s youth wreslting program qualified seven wrestlers to the state finals that will compete at TC Central this Saturday.
