Cub Scout Pack 131 of Suttons Bay held its annual Pinewood Derby on Saturday.

Scouts raced wooden cars designed by the boys and girls down an inclined track. Scouts from Troop 131 assisted with the race, administering the rolling of the cars, as well as welcoming the Cubs to the race and working in the pit area.

The cars were created in numerous unique shapes, and were painted by the Cubs in assorted colors, or left as plain wood. The cars had to be made to certain specifications, particularly that the weight was less than 5 ounces.

The Webelos den of fourth and fifth graders started off the race with uniquely designed cars.

Hayden Stevens won a design award for a black car with white spots. Seth Courtade had a fast white car, and won “Most Aerodynamic.”

Beau Underhill had a nicely sanded wood finish car that he duct taped washers and bolts to for weights. The fastest car was entered by Pearla Underhill.

Winners in the second and third grade Wolf Den: Declan Draper’s great blue shark was a design that won for speed. Logan Hutcheon had a red truck and Nokami Kwe Winchester had the most colorful car, with rainbow paint. Phillip Bradford with unique car, and Zac Richter, with his truck tank green machine, also placed in the design category.

In the Adult’s Race, Charlotte Draper entered a “Hostess Twinkie” complete with white creme filling and accurate labeling; and Dan Draper entered a precisely engineered cyber truck, complete with rocket boosters.

The highly anticipated ‘Anything Goes’ race was the last event, where the older Scouts could enter cars of any weight. Clayton Johnson entered a car that he designed and 3D printed from plastic. Kathryn Rokita entered a car with brightly colored flame designs. Jacob Hlavka and Miller Crow also entered cars weighted down with nuts, bolts, washers, and other items. The most unique car was the 1 foot long piece of cardboard with wheels, created in a few moments of engineering genius by Kai Segerlind.

Cub Scout Pack 131 meets every Tuesday at Keswick Church, from 6 to 7 p.m., and welcomes girls and boys from kindergarten to fifth grade to join at any time, because more fun events are planned. Scout Troop 131 is for boys and girls ages 11-18, and meets every Tuesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m., also at Keswick Church. The Scouts have plans for hiking, camping, learning skills like first aid, and being of service to the community.
