A “historic structures report” might not sound as romantic as spending the night on a lighthouse that stands guard on a shoal in Good Harbor, but the two are closely related. The North Manitou Light Keepers, a nonprofit that owns and plans to rehab the lighthouse, received news this week that it will be receiving $40,000 to pay for the report.

*** The community of Glen Arbor has lost a clerk but gained a fire chief. Glen Arbor Township recently announced the retirement of clerk Bonnie Quick, effective March 31. Quick has served the township as clerk for over 31 years. Supervisor Peter VanNort said Quick is retiring due to health reasons. “The township board understandingly accepts her resignation,” VanNort said.

Numbers compiled at the Maple City co-op weather station show that the winter of 2013-14 will become known as the coldest and snowiest on record in Leelanau County. Not one of the coldest and snowiest. This winter will hold both records — with more snow and Arctic air on the way. “It’s starting to wear on all of us,” said Wally Delameter, Suttons Bay Village manager.

*** St. Mary School children have guardian angels looking after them. The late Jim and Gwen Rich of Suttons Bay left the school more than $200,000 in their estate, school development director Paula Korson announced this week. The Riches loved children, but had none of their own. Their gift to St. Mary is believed to represent the bulk of the couple’s estate, which was distributed to a total of five charitable organizations, Korson said.

25 YEARS AGO March 4, 1999

The Homestead Resort still hopes to build a golf course and housing development on property fronting the Crystal River. The project could begin soon if approved by the Army Corps of Engineers. The 267-acre property has been rezoned to Recreational Open Space by the Township Board.

*** The Kasson Township Board may not mind hosting a new courthouse or jail facility—just not at Myles Kimmerly Park. The Kasson Township is serving notice to Leelanau County Board of Commissioners that Myles Kimmerly Park should not be considered as a site for a new courthouse or jail.

50 YEARS AGO February 28, 1974

Steve Gregory, 24, was named Northport’s new Village Superintendent this week by the Northport Village Council to succeed John A1sup, who recently announced his resignation. Gregory has resided in the Northport area for the past three years.

*** Three persons were treated a local hospitals for injuries resulting from two snowmobile mishaps this past weekend, Leelanau County Sheriff’s Deputies reported. Kyle Schaub, 7, of Woodmere St., Traverse City and Sheila Schaub, 20, of Rt. 1, Cedar were transported to Munson Medical Center by Cedar Rescue Vehicle for treatment of injuries. James E. Earhart Sr., 51, of Detroit, suffered a broken shoulder when his snowmobile rolled over on Gills Pier Road Saturday afternoon, deputies said.

75 YEARS AGO February 26, 1948

Teddy F. Krull of “Glen Craft” on Glen Lake is busy these days trying out the new electric kiln for pottery, which she and her husband, Phil, have just completed building. Ceramics is Teddy’s special interest, and is a field of art in which she is well trained. After studying at the University of Illinois and the Art Institute in Chicago, Teddy spent a winter in Florida at the Abbott Bancroft Studio in Melbourne, where she instructed in ceramics.

*** Several press changes of wide interest among the members of the printing trades, have taken place in the county. The large Miehle flat bed press, formerly owned by Fred Dickinson of the Studio Press on Glen Lake, has been sold to Karl Detzer, who had the press moved to the new Leland office of the Leelanau Enterprise. This press will be used in the printing of the Enterprise in Leland, the same as it has been used in printing the paper at the Studio Press for the past three years.

100 YEARS AGO February 28, 1924

Sheriff Walter Steimel was in town Tuesday on official business.

*** Mr. John and Birney Houdke of East Leland were among our callers on Tuesday.

*** Prosecuting Attorney C.L. Dayton was in town Tuesday on legal business.
