Saving Seventh Street for Seven Generations

Years ago, the State of Michigan gave the Village of Northport about six acres of mostly wooded land near Grand Traverse Bay to be used for recreational purposes. As the Village Council is considering the future of this small parcel on Seventh Street, the entire world is at a tipping point regarding stewardship of our environment.

Fortunately, volunteers have worked to obtain a “Tree City” designation for the Village. The preservation of existing trees, which absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, would demonstrate genuine commitment to that title. Plant and animal life count on such mesic forests for safe habitat. They do not have human voices to speak out in self-defense, but one can hear the call of the pileated woodpeckers if one walks through the area. Otters swim in the waters. Other creatures, quiet and small, thrive there.
