The Comets left no doubt as it notched a district quarterfinal game against Suttons Bay 46-22 – advancing to a district semifinal game against Glen Lake as of press time.

“I think we just kind of slowed ourselves down tonight,” Leland senior Mallory Lowe said. “Obviously district nerves were definitely there for us ... We knew we could push and we knew our potential, but we just had to slow down and work together and focus.”

Lowe led the Comets with an all-around performance of 11 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and four steals.

“I think we just need to work on playing together as a team and really pushing ourselves and knowing that we can do it,” she said.

Leland and Suttons Bay had a slow start as the Comets led the Norse 3-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Both teams would break the ice as Leland scored 19 points in the second quarter to take a 22-9 lead. Leland would hold on for the rest of the game to win 46-22.

Leland junior Elli Miller scored 10 points, 5 rebounds, 6 steals; Ella Knudsen had 6 points, 7 rebounds, 5 steals; Addi Waskiewicz 6 points, 3 steals; Lorna Wiesen 5 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals.

“We had a slow start to the game offensively, but our defense was outstanding throughout the first half. We were able to go on a run to start the second quarter which opened up the game for us and that momentum carried us throughout the rest of the game,” Leland girls basketball coach Ryan Knudsen said.
