Died March 31, 2024
TRAVERSE CITY – Nancy Jean Chippewa, 71, of Traverse City passed away Sunday, March 31, 2024 at Munson Medical Center with her family at her side.
Nancy was born November 30, 1952 in Kewadin, the daughter of James and Delora (Bird) Wilson. On August 31, 1991 she married Earnest Joseph Chippewa who preceded her in death on September 8, 2008.
Nancy enjoyed doing puzzles, watching her favorite baseball team, the Detroit Tigers, shopping, cooking at camp meetings, and goingtobingo. Mostofall, sheenjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Nancy was considered the best sister and the best homemade pie and bread maker, besides mom’s.
Aunt Nan loved us all so much. She made each of us feel like we were her favorite and we all were. She took care of us. Even in her last moments she could see our tears and was passing around tissues so we could wipe our tears. Being able to witness her strength and bravery and to see her smile in anticipation of what was to come was her last gift to us all. She knew she was going to heaven and I’d say she was a tiny bit impatient to get there. God showed her heaven and she could see grandma and grandpa and all our loved ones there waiting for her. She said she was READY.
Nancy is survived by her children, Veronica (David) Wonegeshik, Delora Wilson, Coral (Terry) Bennett; her siblings, Julia Leaureaux, Joyce John, Donna Wilson, Joseph Wilson, James Wilson; her grandchildren, Keegan Kiessel, Jewel Wonegeshik, Coby Wonegeshik, Dustin Wonegeshik, Donovan Wilson, Carly Wilson, Alex Wilson, Trevor Wilson, Robert Wilson, Brandon Walker, Chelsea Walker, Robert Wilson, Brandilynn Wilson, Douglas Wilson Jr., Michael Wilson and Josey Wilson.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Earnest; her children, Robert Miller, Douglas Wilson, Joseph Wilson, her siblings, Moses Wilson, Donald Wilson, Percy Wilson, Charles Wilson, June Wilson, Gary Wilson; her in-laws, Oliver Leaureaux, Allen John, Jolene Wilson and a son in law, Terry Bennett.
The funeral service was held April 3 at the Kewadin United Methodist Church. Burial followed in the Kewadin Indian Mission Cemetery. Mr. Delfred Whitecrow officiated.
