To the editor:
While visiting our children and grandchildren in Texas, imagine my disappointment to see two Leelanau leaders standing behind Donald Trump in Grand Rapids. Both Representative Bergman and Sheriff Borkovich were standing in support of the former president as he spoke cruel and incendiary words about human beings who are risking their lives to reach safety in the United States of America.
The former president is no longer in office, but Representative Bergman has sworn to uphold the Constitution and protect our country from enemies both foreign and domestic, and Sheriff Borkovich’s job is to uphold the rule of law. So to hear Trump use language taken straight from Hitler’s playbook from the 1930s was both chilling and disturbing. It is incumbent upon both our leaders to denounce such language and sentiments if they want to serve our community with integrity.
