Glen Lake softball split a pair of series against Marion and T-C Christian over the past week. After a high scoring 28-18 game one against Marion; Glen Lake rebounded in a nail-biting 8-7 win in game two.
Jessie Pugh had two hits and scored two runs. Laila Shimek added two runs as well in the game-two win. Paige Flores showed her determination after being the losing pitcher in game one by coming in clutch down the stretch in game two. Flores shined from the mound with five strikeouts and allowed seven hits over six innings.
Tuesday, Glen Lake lost a close 10-8 game one to the T-C Christian Sabres before rebounding in game two. Laila Shimek, Emily Bailey, and Grace Noonan had two hits. Madeline Aylsworth contributed a double on a pinch-hit that recorded two RBIs.
Glen Lake took that first loss personally and came out on fire in an 18-3 game two win.
Pugh recorded her first career win as a pitcher and struck out six batters she faced. She also scored four times and recorded three stolen bases. Shimek scored four times and had six RBIs. Ella Flores went 3/3 with two RBIs.
Eagles softball falls
Lake Leelanau St. Mary softball had an up-and-down week on the diamond as the Eagles faced stout competition.
The team would find a big win over Glen Lake last Wednesday in a doubleheader in a pair of five-inning games.
St. Mary defeated the Lakers 13-3 in game one behind an eight-strikeout performance by Eagle junior Cathryn Mikowski who gave up only two hits. Mikowski was also the winning pitcher in game two in a 20-10 five-inning win with sixth strikeouts before Allison Duperon came in and finished the game in the fifth inning.
In game one, St. Mary freshman Lydia Bramer and senior Delana Kirt combined for five RBIs while seniors Della Bunek, Leah Fleis, and Daisy Serrano knocked in another four runs. Bunek was sharp on the bases with four stolen bases.
Glen Lake kept it close in the beginning before the Eagle’s bats showed off. Glen Lake’s Pugh, Shimek, and Emily Bailey scored. Laker pitcher Flores struck out four and Pugh struck out two in the process.
In game two for the Eagles, Mikowski had 2B, 1B, 1RBI; Bramer 2-1B, 1 RBI; Fleis 1B, 2B, 2RBIs; Duperon 1B.
For the Lakers, Pugh went 3-4 with two doubles, and a triple, and scored three runs. Shimek had 3 RBIs, Flores scored twice, and Elodia Peplinski went 3/3 with a double, a triple, and two runs scored. Pugh struck out two.
St. Mary dropped a doubleheader against Buckley 14-3, 14-9 before splitting a pair against TC St. Francis 12-9 loss and 9-1 win on Tuesday.
Suttons Bay softball
Suttons Bay softball lost in a doubleheader against Frankfort on Monday. The Panther no-hit Suttons Bay 15-0 in the first game.
“The girls are working hard. This group of players is the most positive team that I have ever coached,” Suttons Bay coach Gary Galla said.
Ella Ingwersen took the loss. The defensive play of the game for us was a base hit to center. Maya Pichon threw it to Journey Braden at second to tag a Frankfort runner out who was trying to round second base.
Frankfort won 15-0 in game two.
Ingwerson had Suttons Bay’s only hit leading off the second game and then stole second and third base before being stranded. Braden took the loss.
