Glen Lake Baseball (4-1-2) kicked off the season with an odd statline after a hectic week on the diamond.
In a pair of unfortunate ties during a three-game tournament on Saturday, Glen Lake tied Norway 1-1. Senior pitcher Cooper Bufalini pitched six innings, throwing nine strikes and allowing only three hits. The Lakers were led by juniors Benji Allen and seniors Aiden Gokey, each contributing singles.
In the second game of the tournament, Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart defeated the Lakers 10-0. Glen Lake then tied Marion 5-5 in the third game, concluding the day with a record of 0-1-2. Laker senior Isaac Hlavka pitched 4.2 innings, securing five strikeouts, while Gokey pitched 1.2 innings with three strikeouts. Allen had two hits, and Gokey contributed with a single and a double.
On Tuesday, the Lakers defeated TC Christian 10-0 and 5-1. Hlavka claimed victory in the first game from the mound with nine strikeouts, while Allen secured game two with 11 strikeouts. Joey Rioux led the Lakers’ hitters with two hits, followed by Allen, Bufalini, Peter Gelsinger, and Tanner Crick, each contributing two RBIs. Hlavka had two RBI triples in the second game win.
The Lakers will compete in a tournament at the Pit Spitters’ home in Traverse City against Suttons Bay and Harbor Springs on Saturday, April 20.
Last Wednesday, Glen Lake defeated St. Mary 10-1 and lost 0-13.
SB bounces back with win over Frankfort
Suttons Bay baseball secured a Northwest Conference doubleheader win against Frankfort on Tuesday, marking a strong comeback for the Norsemen.
In game one, Suttons Bay junior Lucas Gordon showcased dominance on the mound, tallying 15 strikeouts, three walks, and allowing only two hits in a 7-5 victory. Sophomore Zachariah Raphael sealed the win with a game-deciding threerun home run, providing the first win and momentum for the series. The Norsemen continued their dominance in game two, with Raphael as the winning pitcher and Tyler Brenner earning the save. Gordon contributed with a 2-2 performance, scoring three runs and securing two RBIs. Brenner added a double and two RBIs, while Ethan Sams also recorded an RBI.
The Norsemen battled Bellaire yesterday as of press time before playing in the Pit Spitters tournament in Traverse City.
Eagles rebound
After suffering defeats against Glen Lake earlier in the week, the St. Mary baseball team made a strong comeback, securing victories in a pair of doubleheaders against Buckley and Bear Lake.
On Saturday, the Eagles triumphed over Buckley with scores of 11-1 and 17-3. Gannon Mitchell led the charge with five strikeouts in five innings, securing the win for St. Mary. Bunek contributed with two RBIs, capitalizing on walks as the Bears issued six and stole seven bases.
In game two, the Eagles dominated with a 12-run fourth inning, routing the Bears 17-3. The Bears’ four walks in the fourth inning and nine overall paved the way for the explosive run production. Edwin Ryder led the offense, going 2-3, while the Eagles collectively amassed 10 hits in the game.
