In a close 3-1 match, Charlevoix proved too much for Suttons Bay girls soccer team on Monday.

Charlevoix Rayders went into the break up 1-0.

Suttons Bay would provide offensive pressure in the second half but several chances were stopped by the Rayders goalkeeper.

Charlevoix found the back of the net with its second goal, and the third found the back of the net shortly after.

Suttons Bay wouldn’t give up as sophomore Megan U’Ren scored the lone Norse goal on a breakaway with less than five minutes remaining.

Glen Lake Soccer

Glen Lake soccer took its fate into its own hands over the past week as the Lakers went 2-1 overall.

The Lakers defeated Kingsley 3-0 last week with 10 players. Ava Raymond scored on a direct free kick from outside the box early in the first half. Glen Lake never stopped its offensive attacks, with Mia Luthardt assisting Maggie Diotte for the Laker’s second goal. Diotte scored the third goal in unassisted fashion.

Glen Lake senior Eleanor Valkner sealed the shutout with six acrobatic saves as she earned the team’s game ball.

The Lakers then traveled to an elite TC St. Francis squad and lost 8-0.

Glen Lake held tough for the first 20 minutes with only nine players. This would be the third week in a row the Laker’s played short-handed. Glen Lake’s defense and counter-attack struggled against the speed of the Gladiators. Autumn Staley earned the game ball for her valiant defensive effort.

The Lakers turned around and won 4-1 in an 8-vs-8 soccer match against TC Central JV on Monday.

“TC Central has quite a few really good players. The girls really attacked, found feet, and space, and defended incredibly well,” Glen Lake coach Eric Luthardt said.

Raymond scored a left-footed 30-yarder assisted by Peace Hawley-Joppich.

Glen Lake went down to seven players in the second half, but Abbi Steffke got her first goal as a Laker assisted by Raymond. Hawley Joppich assisted Raymond in scoring the fourth goal.

TCC scored in the final minutes of the game to quell the shutout attempt. Nora Ciolek had five saves and performed well in the net.

Raymond earned the game ball with all the offensive power she has brought the Lakers.

Leland continues winning ways

Leland (8-1, 4-0) kicked off another strong week with a pair of shutout wins over Buckley and Benzie Central.

“I think we’re just playing one game at a time and just keep working with each other, building our connections stronger,” Mallory Lowe said last week. “Each team brings us a new challenge. So figuring out how to take on those challenges and conquer them.”

In the win against Buckley, Leland exploded in the second half after going into the break up 1-0 on an Ariah Amin corner kick goal served from Addi Wakiewicz.

Second-half goals for the Comets came from Cameron Flees on an assist from Kally Sluiter; Willa Murray scored from a dish by Lillian Connor; Waskiewicz added an unassisted goal to finish the game.

Elli Miller earned the first shutout.

Monday, Leland walked into Benzie and walked out with a smooth 8-0 victory.

The Comets started the game 4-0 at halftime behind goals from Bri VanSteenhouse (1), Lowe (2), and Lillian Connor (1). Second-half goals were scored by Sluiter (1), Murray (1), Connor (1), and Maya Hameling.

“Districts and regionals are always in the back of our minds and that’s our end goal and we’re kind of working every day towards that, but we are just keeping our minds right where they are one game at a time,” Leland defender Olive Ryder said last week.

Assists in the win over Benzie were tallied by Maya Wrner (1), and Hadley Bison (2). Miller and Elise Vann combined for the shutout win.

The Comets are now 5-0 in the northwest conference and 7-1 overall.
