Glen Lake’s Joey Rioux hit his first home run in grand slam fashion during a pair of 15-0 mercy wins over Onekama on Tuesday.
“It was crazy, my first home run ever in my life. That was really exciting ... I didn’t know at the moment,” Rioux said. “I didn’t even realize that I hit it that far.”
The grand slam happened in the first of two games against Onekama when Rioux saw a slightly inside pitch that he took yard, just inside the left field foul pole with a simple swing.
“I timed it pretty well and I gave it a good ride,” he said.
Glen Lake senior Cooper Bufalini and junior Benji Allen earned wins against the Portagers.
The Lakers (12-1-2) won a pair of games Saturday to win the Laker Invitational against Cadillac and Mesick.
In game one, Glen Lake defeated Mesick behind Bufalini’s arm with eight strikeouts. He also had two hits and three RBIs while Allen had three hits and four RBIs.
Cadillac defeated Mesick in game two 10-2.
“We’ve been working on our hitting. It was a bit rough earlier in the year, but we got it down now for sure,” Rioux said.
The Lakers knew it had a ball game in the third and final game of the day against Cadillac.
Glen Lake pulled away from Cadillac 9-4 as Allen threw 10 strikeouts to earn the win. Issac Hlavka tallied a save in two innings of work with two strikeouts.
Laker senior Fletcher Middleton nailed a 3-run home run to add cushion for Glen Lake’s win.
The Lakers will host Buckley on Thursday at 4:15 p.m.
Lake Leelanau St. Mary earned a pair of wins over Suttons Bay on Friday 9-1 and 6-4.
St. Mary pulled away in the fifth inning of game one when the Eagles scored six runs. St. Mary senior Jerry Schaub smashed a home run to right field that scored three runs.
St. Mary pitcher Gannon Mitchell earned the win for St. Mary after he gave up five hits and struck out three.
Both teams would battle the entirety of game two. The Norsemen started with a 1-0 lead, before St. Mary scored four in the second inning.
Suttons Bay would tie the game 4-4 when Tyler Porter had a sacrifice RBI. Smart base running and sacrifice RBIs led St. Mary to take back the lead.
St. Mary junior Josh Bunek earned the win for St. Mary as he struck out six.
