The stage was set for another thrilling clash between Leland and Suttons Bay girls’ soccer teams as the skies cleared for their anticipated matchup on Monday. With both sides easy to claim victory, the Comets soared to triumph once again, securing a hard-fought 2-0 win over Suttons Bay.
Leland went up 1-0 at the half as both teams had few chances during the game that was played in midfield.
In the second half, Leland dominated the time of possession, but struggled to break through Suttons Bay back line.
The Norse had few opportunities of their own, but couldn’t find a quality scoring chances through Leland’s defensive line.
The Comets continued a hot start with a 2-0-1 record in four other games played this past week.
Leland hosted the TC Bulldogs last Thursday and beat them 4-0 behind the feet of four separate goal scorers.
Leland attackers Addi Waskiewicz, Murray, Hadley Bison, and Lilly Connor scored while Maya Warner, Connor, and senior Mallory Lowe each had an assist.
In a tournament, Leland played Harbor Springs and Cadillac on Saturday.
The MHSAA Div. 4 Comets tied Div. 2 Cadillac Vikings 0-0, courtesy of the Comets defensive back line that kept the Cadillac offense in check. Leland’s Olive Ryder, Lorna Wiesen, Emerie Burda, and Ariah Amin can be credited with the masterful defensive performance.
In the following game, Leland defeated Harbor Springs 4-1, behind a two-goal performance from Mallory Lowe.
Waskiewicz, Connor, and Murray each tallied a goal as well.
Glen Lake continued to charge forward with less than a full squad over the past week.
The Lakers defeated Benzie Central 10-2 behind a five-goal, one-assist performance from Glen Lake senior Ava Raymond.
Laker attacker Abbi Steffke scored two goals and three assists on the day. Peace Hawley-Joppich also scored two goals.
Laker midfielder Nora Ciolek tallied her first high school career goal and dished out two assists while Autumn Staley (2) and Emily Alaimo (1) combined for three assists.
Ciolek and Kady Brown Novak combined for the shutout with seven saves.
“Was a good game, everyone was aggressive going forward with six players getting on the score sheet. It was great seeing the progression and playing hard while short a few players,” Glen Lake coach Eric Luthardt said. “Goals and opportunities were fast and furious.”
Glen Lake battled TC West JV to a 6-2 loss on Monday. Steffke and Ciolek each tallied a goal.
Steffke had a wonderful 30-yard free-kick goal and Nora Ciolek scored on a nice individual effort. Ciolek and Novak combined for the shutout with six saves.
