Track stars shine

Leland, Glen Lake, and Lake Leelanau St. Mary track teams are growing and excelling as the 2024 season continues to take shape.
St. Mary senior Jessica Grant was all smiles at the Onekama Invitational on Friday, April 26 when she finished sixth in discus with a throw of 83’ 4.

Leland senior Jimmy Alpi is setting personal pecords in the 110 and 300 Hurdles. Alpi took first in the 110-meter hurdles with a personal record time of 17.97. He also finished second in the 300-meter hurdle, behind Glen Lake's Tyler Bixby who claimed first with times of 44.12 and 45.24.

second in the 400-meter run with a time of 54.78. Glen Lake junior Colebrook Sutherland was narrowly edged out in the 800meter run to finish second. He turned around and won the 3200meter run with a time of 10:54.

For the girls, Leland junior Ella Knudsen is also earning PRs. Knudsen has surpassed her times in the 400, 1600, and 3200 this season. She ran a clean sweep in the 800, 1600, and 3200-meter runs on Saturday where she finished first in all events. The 4x800-relay team of Knudsen, Natalie Burpee, Alyssa Korson, Abby Hicks took home gold with a time of 11:48.

Glen Lake senior Kariesue Taghon caught fire in the 100meter run when she ran a 13.06 to claim first. She then turn around and won the 200-meter run by a half second with a time of 27.28.

Glen Lake’s Eleanor Valkner finished third in both shot put and discus.
