In an effort to comply with state requirements for graduation, the Glen Lake Board of Education approved a proposal to offer a personal finance pilot class at the secondary level.
According to board references, pupils entering grade 8 in 2023, will be required to complete a 1/2 credit court in personal finance that aligns with subject area content expectations developed by the Department of Education and approved by the state board under section 1278b.
Expectations of the program include learning skills including earning income; buying goods and services; budgeting and saving; using credit; financial investing; protecting and insuring; and paying taxes. The stated requirement will not go fully into effect until 2027-28, but Glen Lake’s vision includes a pilot class as an elective in 2024-25; all seniors take either a business math or personal finance elective in 2025-26; and all seniors take personal finance in 2026-27.
