The Glen Lake Clay Target Shooting team is hitting its targets and excelling at the spring season as the Lakers eye the state tournament in June.
“We’ve been shooting pretty good. We’ve been just going week by week and we’re gonna keep practicing and get ready for states,” Laker senior Colin Kasben said. “(Clay Target) is not a typical sport where you just use a ball to play a sport ... not very many people know about it.”
Glen Lake leads all schools after four weeks of competition with 92.50 points followed by Michigan Lutheran with 91.3, and Kingsley with 81.1 points.
Alex Eaton led the charge in week four with a total trapshooting score of 49, followed by Colin Kasben and Riley Kinnee tied at 36, Travis Krohn at 34, Eddie Noonan at 43, Austin O’Connor 45, Henry Plamondon 41, and Ethan Verschaeve 42.
Scores are kept by how many targets an athlete shoots.
Krohn, one of two seniors on the team, says trap shooting is all about getting ready for the fall.
“I’m preparing for the hunting season pretty much. Shooting ducks, this will translate pretty well to that,” Krohn said. “Keep your feet planted in the same spot, up and down, same thing every time.”
Two weeks ago, Eaton was in the zone starting off with a 24 and shooting 25 straight in his second round. O’Connor was close behind with a 22 and 23 followed by Noonan and Verschaeve both with 21 and 22, Ostrowski tied with them shooting a 23 and 20. Plamondon did well with a 22 and 18, tied with Kinnee shooting a 21 and 19. Kasben finished strong with a 20 and a 19, and Krohn with a 16 and a 17.
“We are seeing a lot of improvement from all our team members. It’s safe to say everyone is enjoying the season,” Glen Lake coach Elizabeth Mikowski said.
In the beginning of May, Glen Lake dominated the field with a total of 330 points, followed by Michigan Lutheran, Kingsley, Deckerville, Paw Paw, Midland, Vestaburg, and Fenville High School.
Eaton led with 48 points in week two. Kasben (22, 22), Kinnee (21,20), Krohn (16, 16), Noonan (23, 24) O’Connor (23,23), Ostrowski (20, 22), Plamondon (21, 24), and Verschaeve (19, 23).
“Everyone on the team is super close. A lot of us do that Sunday trap shooting too. We shoot on Tuesdays, Wednesdays,” Kasben said.
