Flag represents all

To the editor:

Last Thursday, June 6, I watched the ceremonies at the Normandy American Cemetery in France, honoring the events of eighty years ago. Flying above the graves of the 9,388 American soldiers buried there I saw our flag- the proud symbol of our nation. It made me think of those who bravely defend our freedom in the armed services. But I also thought of those they fight for- those who create the incredible tapestry that is our country, working, perhaps less heroically, to keep it the great country that it is- in fire departments, police stations, hospitals, classrooms, volunteer civic organizations, factories, farms, stores and, yes, offices. This Friday is Flag Day, commemorating the adoption of our flag by the Continental Congress 247 years ago-June 14, 1777. It still represents us all. Wear it, display and carry it proudly, but remember it also represents those who do not so display it.
