HONOR – Doris Mae Plowman, 88, of Honor, passed away peacefully Sunday, June 2, 2024, at The Villa at Traverse Point with her family at her side.

Doris was born on May 19, 1936, in Cincinnati, Ohio to Joseph and Catherine (McDermott) Mackzum and spent her youth developing a love of life, family and horses.

On July 27, 1957, at St. Peter/St. Paul Church in Norwood Ohio, Doris’s life changed forever when she married Gordon Alonzo Plowman and traded city life for a home in rural Leelanau County Michigan. Doris accepted the challenge of a modest country life and in a few short years, would see her family expand to include three sons. Doris liked to combine her love for horses and her family and often took her sons to view horses and sometimes ride them. Shetland ponies were her favorite and she would lead the horse with one of her sons hanging on the saddle horn urging her to go faster.

As time passed, Doris and Gordon carved out a living and managed to raise a family. Doris supported Gordon in their endeavors even when it required standing side by side fileting fish, picking cherries, running a convenience store on M-109 by the Sand Dunes, running an excavating/ construction business or caring for the numerous Beagles.

Doris accepted whatever curves and bumps life afforded and remained loving and strong. Doris was family driven and loved it when the entire family would come to visit and would always cook a big meal for everyone to enjoy.

Doris’s loving nature lasted her entire life and was evident by the impact she had on residents and staff at The Villa at Traverse Point in her final months even as she remained strong against the physical ailments she was enduring.

Doris is survived by her three sons, Aaron Plowman, Barth (Susan) Plowman, Craig (Michelle) Plowman; her grandchildren, Steven (Emma) Plowman, Stephanie (Tyler) Schutt, Sara (Alexander) Knight, Brian (Mara) Baker, Morgan (William) Chartier, Bethani (Sierra) Baker, Cara Plowman, Jason (Amanda) Plowman and her great grandchildren, Teddy, Silas, Andrew, Jeremy, Aurora, Adelyn, Liam, Hope, Koltyn and Finley.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Gordon, after 65 years of marriage.

Memorial contributions in Doris’ honor may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association www.act.alz.org/donate Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 29 with the funeral service following at 1 p.m. Funeral services are provided by Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay.
