To the editor:
Unbelievably, and in a break from past practices, local senior citizens were denied their right to obtain political and volunteer information from both Republicans and Democrats at last Tuesday’s Senior Expo held at Suttons Bay High School.
The Expo promised to “bring in over 100 vendors showcasing the latest in information, resources, products, and services; giving you the tools to live a full life as you age.”
The Republicans and Democrats were kicked out of the Expo, and school policy was given as the reason, even though it is nearly impossible to imagine that a school in Leelanau County has an anti-free speech policy. Further, such policy has never before been voiced or enforced at the Expo.
Then the reason given was that there is a new school superintendent. Then the reason given was that there had been a fight, but no answer came about where/when such fight occurred.
In bewilderment, as they were picking up their wares to leave, the Republicans were threatened with criminal trespassing charges if they did not hurry.
Warning: censorship has arrived in Leelanau County and there are tyrants here who are all too happy to enforce it. We need to stand up to them, and fast.
Being triggered by, and gagging, representatives from our two major political parties is not acceptable and runs counter to our Constitutional freedoms. This is a big deal.
