The West Virginia University Alumni Band, along with members of the Northport Community Band, will present “A Tribute Concert for Don Wilcox” on Saturday, July 13 7 p.m. at the Northport Public School auditorium.

Wilcox, who recently passed away at his home in Northport was the beloved and respected Director of Bands Emeritus at West Virginia University, and the long-time conductor of the Northport Community Band during his “retirement.” While at WVU, he made the then-controversial decision to allow women to join the marching band (1972), tripled the size of the band from under 100 to more than 300, and in 1997, the “Pride of West Virginia” was awarded the Sudler Trophy as the nation’s most outstanding collegiate marching band.

Admission is free and donations will be accepted for the Don Wilcox Music Scholarship Fund. The concert will feature several selections arranged by Wilcox, along with pieces by Gustav Holst, Percy Grainer, Sergei Rachmaninoff and others.
