Niitagabo-Kwe First Standing Woman 1971 ~ 2024
CHARLEVOIX – Shelly Marie McSawby, 52, of Charlevoix, passed away Monday, July 1, 2024 at Munson Medical Center with her family at her side.
Shelly was born August 31, 1971 in Traverse City the daughter of Geneva La Sieur ( nee Stevens) and Gary McSawby. Shelly was raised in Wisconsin on the Lac Courte Oreilles Reservation. She was a Blackjack dealer at the Sevenwinds Casino. She also lived in Charlevoix with her Grandparents Irene and Mike Mitchell, whom she cared for.
She was caring, lovable and put others before herself. Shelly was a caretaker to Betty Lou Kewagshken whom she referred to as grandmother. She would also care for her family and others she felt close too. She loved Pow Wows, dancing to Prince, cook outs, b-day parties and gifts.
Shelly is survived by her mother Geneva (Larry) La Sieur, her father Gary McSawby, a sister, Sandra Meadows and many loving aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and extended family members.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, George and Junita Stevens, and her paternal grandparents, Irene and Michael Mitchell, Susan and Roland La Sieur.
Services were held on Friday, July 5th at the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay. Burial followed in St. Kateri Tekakwitha Cemetery of Peshawbestown.
