Carl Shelton passed away on July 6, 2024 at Munson Hospice House in Traverse City, MI.
Born on July 9, 1939 in Detroit, MI, his parents were Phillip and Irene (Steinbrecher) Shelton.
His educational pursuits included a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from General Motors Institute (1962), Master’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Michigan (1963), and a PhD in Physics from Catholic University of America, Washington, DC (1970).
A physicist, engineer, and inventor, Carl was employed at IBM and Spectra Physics, completing research and development of scanners and a variety of lasers, for which he received a patent. As Vice-President of Engineering at Quantum Corporation, Milpitas, CA, he directed the design of disc drive storage systems for computers. Carl moved to the San Jose, CA area in the early 70’s where he worked until his retirement in 1990.
Carl and his wife, Kathleen, met in Ann Arbor and were married on June 17, 1989. After he retired, they decided to move back to Michigan in 1991. Living in Leelanau County for 25 years, and recently Traverse City, they loved the unique beauty of the area. Most importantly, they met many people who have remained good friends. Carl will be lovingly remembered for his sense of humor, positive strength, and photography talent.
Carl is survived by his loving wife, Kathleen; sister, Phyllis Rice; children: Bethany (Glenn) Hadlock, Carl Shelton Jr. (Ulrika), Susan Shelton; granddaughters: Lorna Hadlock, Allison Hadlock, and Kaylee Shelton.
A time of visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 13, 2024 in the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home Tent, 305 6th St. Traverse City. A funeral service, officiated by Father Wayne Dziekan, will immediately follow at 10:30 a.m., also in the funeral home tent. Burial will take place at St. John Catholic Cemetery in Jackson, MI.
