Wessell, ‘inclusive, respectful’

To the editor: The article on the resignation of commissioner Jamie Kramer cites reasons for the resignation were time constraints, dissatisfaction with the chairman, the culture survey, and concerns about unequal treatment of women. As a long-time advocate for equality, I am compelled to address the statement about “sexual discrimination” as implied toward chairman, Ty Wessell Respectfully, my experience is contrary to what was implied in the article.

The article on the resignation of commissioner Jamie Kramer cites reasons for the resignation were time constraints, dissatisfaction with the chairman, the culture survey, and concerns about unequal treatment of women.

As a long-time advocate for equality, I am compelled to address the statement about “sexual discrimination” as implied toward chairman, Ty Wessell Respectfully, my experience is contrary to what was implied in the article.

I’ve known Ty for many years, worked with him on Boards, and both social and project committees. He is one of the most inclusive, respectful persons I have encountered. In meetings, he is often the last to speak. After listening intently to all, he summarizes the consensus with any additional thoughts. Ty is an open-minded, patient, kind, gentleman. His actions demonstrate his commitment to equal treatment of all. In an environment where unfair treatment was observed, Ty would lead by example to demonstrate appropriate conduct. He would not dismiss a colleague based on their age or gender.

Time commitment for public servants is substantial. Officials (especially those with careers and family commitments) have genuine time management challenges. When time constraints interfere with effectiveness, resignation is an option.

The Board is now tasked with selecting a replacement. The (appointed) incumbent potentially receiving an advantage in the November election.

Other approaches should be encouraged to retain officials. Holding fewer, albeit longer meetings, delegating time-consuming projects, and other measures to “lighten the load” may have allowed commissioner Kramer to complete the last 4 months of her term.
