For those looking for an alternative to alcoholic drinks, the growing popularity of cannabisinfused beverages have been an option people tend to choose when searching for something unique that could offer a similar experience.
According to a recent study from the National Library of Medicine, long-term trends in cannabis-use in the U.S. “parallel corresponding changes in cannabis policy,” and daily cannabis- use has now exceeded the number of daily and near daily drinkers. With cannabis in general being utilized more often in legalized states, so are the types of products made from it.
At Olean’s Dispensary in Northport, Leelanau County’s first cannabis dispensary, owner Daniel Caudill said they’ve expanded their CBD/THC beverage offerings since they opened in December 2021.
One of the store’s most popular brands is “Tonic.” Olean’s sells its original Tonic drinks which contain 100 mg THC per bottle for easy dosing, and includes flavors ranging from everything like tropical punch, citrus lime, raspberry lemonade, and mandarin orange. The Tonic brand is described as “the perfect choice for those who want to drink happy without worrying about a hangover.” There is also an easy dose strip on the back of each bottle that simplifies dosing for control, as the onset of effects can take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour. People can get creative with their own dosing and make mocktails out of the various Tonic flavors to share with others as well.
“The Tonic brand drinks have been really popular. There are options on strength and types,” Caudill said. “They are the easiest to mix with cocktails and also easy to monitor dosage… The drinks have started to be very popular, especially during months like dry January when people are trying to have a drink alternative.”
The dispensary’s selection includes other go-to beverages like the CQ brand ginger ale and classic cola, but with a THC twist, and peach and raspberry flavored cannabis infused iced tea from “Pleasantea.” The consumption of cannabis drinks are faster-acting compared to edibles, and small doses are recommended for those that are trying it for the first time.
“We wanted to make sure we have a wide selection of drink types like a Cola and Ginger Ale, along with the tonics you can add to other drinks,” he said. “Drinks are a great alternative to edibles. It really comes down to how people like to consume cannabis products.”
Caudill said the best way to try a THC or CBD product is to look for a flavor that you like and to try it in a small amount. Turning to recommendations from those that work at the dispensary where someone can help find what best suits your needs is another way to find available products.
“That is an easy way to gauge the effects and monitor what the right dosage is for each individual,” he said. “Also bud-tenders are very knowledgeable about the products, and can help guide someone in the right direction.”
