Spend a summer evening in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore swinging to the everpopular tunes of the big band era at one of the national park’s historic farms.
A “Big Band by the Barn” fundraiser will be held Thursday, August 15 from 5 to 9:30 p.m. and promises to be a unique event at the Port Oneida Heritage Center/Olsen Farm located 4 miles north of Glen Arbor.
The celebration supports National Park Partner, Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear, marking their 25th year in service to Sleeping Bear Dunes, helping to preserve the 19th century historic properties and stories within the Lakeshore that at one time were at risk of being lost. Their success includes completion of dozens of historic preservation projects, development of historic tours and programs, rehabilitation of the Olsen farmhouse, and reimagining the farm into Preserve’s offices and Port Oneida Heritage Center. The value of their contribution to the national park is over $2 million.
“We’re so excited to welcome people to this beautiful setting in the park, and enjoy the 11-piece River City Jazz Band, from Grand Rapids”, said Executive Director Susan Pocklington. “Big Band tunes are of course popular for seniors and have had a resurgence with youth who are taking up swing dancing, though there is no requirement to swing. Get out on the dance floor in your own style, toe-tap or just enjoy the music! The evening offers something fun and different in our region that aligns with our mission of preserving and sharing our heritage. Tickets to the 1920s – 1940s themed event includes a social hour with appetizers, optional free swing dance instruction, and an art auction in the barn; dinner and dancing under a big tent by the barn, featuring Glen Arbor Wines; photo opps with a 1940s antique car; a costume contest for those that want to dress in that era (not necessary) and a few other fun activities, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore Superintendent Scott Tucker and others will be present for a toast, and brief celebratory remarks in recognition of those who have contributed to the success of Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear over the years.
