Support for trail extension

To the editor: We are big fans of TART since living near the Leelanau Trail and watching it transform the community around it in a positive way! We now live in Cleveland Township and when using the Heritage Trail, it’s wonderful to see people experiencing the beauty and ecodiversity of the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore in such a unique and healthy way! As advocates for people with disabilities, we also love that the SBHT trail provides an accessible and truly immersive way to experience the National Lakeshore for people with mobility challenges. The process of creating this next section has been nothing but respectful of the community- using input from a series of public Cleveland Township meetings held in 2018 to inform the route.

The process of creating this next section has been nothing but respectful of the community- using input from a series of public Cleveland Township meetings held in 2018 to inform the route. The current trail is proof that the people involved in its creation respect its environment and have made the Park accessible to the public in a thoughtful, low impact and safe manner. Anyone who actually uses the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail gets it! It’s amazing, unique and enjoyed by a multitude of people!! We are absolutely confident that TART, NPS and MDOT will continue to hold themselves to the high standards that they have established thus far. This section of the trail will equal or surpass the rest of the trail and we can’t wait until the section of the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail from 669 to 651 is complete so that we will be able to explore and experience this new stretch of the Lakeshore!
