Owners Sue and Ken Burns established a name as the original markers of upcycled wool sweater accessories from their workshop at 1006 S. Sawmill Rd., Lake Leelanau.

“We were green before green was cool,” owners and designer Sue Burns said. “It’s been amazing to see our company grow over the past three decades, and we are excited to share even more fall and winter accessories as we enter our 30th season in business.”

Using 100% vintage materials including salvaged wool sweaters and buttons — Burns and the Baabaazuzu team handcraft, upcyle, and transform materials into one-of-a-kind pieces for consumers to wear in cooler temperatures.

Over the years, the sustainable accessory company has been recognized as a Michigan Top 50 Company to Watch and their products have appeared on ABC’s “Skating with the Stars” and HGTV’s “Cash and Cari.”

However, their story begins with a laundry snafu in 1993, when Burns husband mistakenly put one of her favorite wool sweaters into the dryer. Rather than come to tears, Burns dismantled her beloved wears and transformed them into her now international brand.

Baabaazuzu’s wool accessories range from upcycled sweater mittens, fingerless gloves, hats, hoodie scarves, jackets and more. Setting themselves apart from competitors who try to replicate their original style, Baabaazuzu lines each piece with quality fleece to the item and give extra warmth.
