In addition to the new Principal Shelagh Fehrenbach, there will plenty of faces — new and old — greeting students at Leland Public School next week.

Longtime science teacher Jeremy Peplinski has been appointed assistant principal. Peplinski has more than 25 years experience teaching high school science, primarily at Leland.

Born and raised in the county, Peplinski graduated from Suttons Bay High School in 1993 and went on to earn an undergraduate degree in chemistry and biology at Central Michigan University. He also earned a master’s degree in school administration at CMU.

Two new middle school teachers have joined the staff. They are Alayna Neilly, science and Justin Lazar, social science.

Kevin Sams is the new K-12 physical education and health teacher.

Meanwhile Jennifer McDaniel will teach kindergarten and Lisa Migazzi will have a first/second mixed classroom.

Julie Yoffy has been brought on to serve as middle school interventionist.

As of this week, the school district was still looking for a K-12 special education teacher; classroom aides and a day-shift custodian.

Also new this year is:

• An updated HVAC system with four new roof-top units and updated air conditioning for the Performing Arts Center.

• A new classroom for an additional special education teacher the district has been created.

• With bus drivers hard to come by, a new 10-passenger van will help provide transportation to smaller groups of students and athletes.

• Comet Club, before and after school program, with personalized academic intervention in math and reading for K-5 students.

Leland’s back-to-school open house is tonight and includes a Farm-to-Table dinner.
