The Leelanau School in Glen Arbor is expanding its programs to serve today’s adolescent students and their future goals through a renewed strategic plan, new offerings, staffing, students, and professional development investments, according to Leelanau Head of School Rob Hansen.
“We are very excited to welcome students back to campus, as we have missed their enthusiasm and energy, and they are eager to return. We are especially honored to add several new students to our community who recognize the unique opportunities that exist at Leelanau.”
Recently, the school dedicated the Charles E. Scripps Jr. Creativity Center on its campus, housing a ceramics studio, a newly donated woodworking shop, and a laser engraving program. The center is aligned to the school’s tradition of handson and entrepreneurial learning. These applied arts programs teach creativity, design, and the discipline needed to turn ideas into reality.
“This collaborative effort to expand our students’ experiences is inspiring,” Hansen said. “Schooling shines when the greater community shows interest and contributes to the growth of our youth.
“This attention and intention by our Leelanau family to help prepare our students for adulthood and build opportunities is transformational for our learners and our faculty. Creative ideas are flowing.”
In addition to expanding its applied arts program, Leelanau has invested in professional development to enhance socialemotional support for students and staff. “Students are navigating adolescence with opportunities and obstacles unique to these times. We have to constantly educate ourselves to be the most helpful school we can be for our kids,” Hansen said.
For the 2024-25 school year, Leelanau welcomes several new staff members to serve our students:
• Kiernan Dean-Hall: A Kalamazoo College graduate with a diverse academic background and teaching experience, he brings a wide range of talents to the school’s science and math programs.
• Nathan Rogers: A multiinstrumentalist and guitar expert with a strong background in musical performance and craftsmanship, he adds depth to the music program.
• Michael Gaden: With extensive experience in education and natural resources, he will enrich the math, science and outdoor education programs.
• Avery Kostrzewa: A creative professional with a passion for education and the arts will expand the residential life program.
•Meagen Kopacki: A compassionate nurse with diverse healthcare experience, drawn to Leelanau’s focus on student wellness.
