Dysfunctional group

To the editor: I read with GREAT interest the headline article “Board OK’s employee survey” in the November 16 edition of the Leelanau Enterprise. I have been a resident of Suttons Bay for over ten years and am concerned at the number of examples where conduct among the Leelanau County Board of Commissioners has demonstrated acrimony and or contempt.

To the editor:

I read with GREAT interest the headline article “Board OK’s employee survey” in the November 16 edition of the Leelanau Enterprise. I have been a resident of Suttons Bay for over ten years and am concerned at the number of examples where conduct among the Leelanau County Board of Commissioners has demonstrated acrimony and or contempt. My career in business involved conflict resolution, often at the highest levels of organizations and I understand the implications when people cannot function cooperatively. We, sitting on the outside, never really know the issues surrounding the behavior of the County Board. I have no idea the cause(s) of the Board’s inability to work together but my experience tell me that generally, one or more people are the cause and as long as they remain part of the dysfunctional group nothing will change. I applaud the Commission’s retention of an outside facilitator and hope the result of the process will prove an exception to my example and the Board will begin to function as a coherent body serving the best interests of the county.
