Leland participated in the East Jordan Party in the Park Cross Country Invitational on Wednesday to begin their season.
Leland senior Ella Knudsen finished fourth overall with a time of 20:12. Her teammate Sophie Grinage finished eighth (21:41) followed by Natalie Burpee in 19th (23:02); Alyssa Korson 49th (31:48).
Grinage and Korson both set personal records during the race.
“This race gave us a great baseline to see where we are at so far this season, and what we need to work on as we move forward, and we are excited about having a full team for our next race at the Buckley Invitational to see what we can accomplish as a team this season,” Leland coach Ann Knudsen said.
On the boys side, Leland freshman Christopher Knudsen and Carter Suttman, and sophomore Evan Keen led with top-10 finishes. Knudsen finished seventh (17:55), Suttman finished eighth (18:09), and Keen finished ninth with a time of 18:17.
Campbell Fedderman and Chase Denoyer also had impressive finishes as Fedderman finished 14th and Denoyer 27th overall.
“Our boy’s team had an amazing first race that showed their potential for a great season. Even with a young group made up of four freshmen and one sophomore they were able to finish in second place overall as a team,” Knudsen said. “As a team we had four personal records set including freshman Campbell Fedderman with a time of 18:52, and Chase Denoyer with a time of 21:47. As this team continues to grow and gain confidence this season they will be a fun team to watch.”
The Comets will compete next on Saturday at the Buckley Bear Invitational at 9 a.m.
