As summer fades and the crispness of autumn begins to settle over Leelanau County, the return to school is upon us.

For students, parents, and educators alike, this time of year is both exciting and filled with promise. The serene landscapes and close-knit communities that define Leelanau County provide a unique backdrop for a fresh start in education.

Leelanau County schools are more than just places of learning; they are the heartbeats of our communities. From Suttons Bay to Northport and all the way down to the Maple City area, our schools offer not only academic excellence but also a deep connection to the region’s rich cultural heritage and natural beauty.

One example is Pathfinder School’s new Forest Kindergarten which offers an immersive learning experience on the Greilickville school’s campus which includes frontage on Cedar Lake.

Our schools are also renowned for blending tradition with innovation. Suttons Bay’s robotics program, an extracurricular, helps students apply what they’ve learned in the classroom to compete at the state and national levels. It also includes students from St. Mary and Northport.

Many Leelanau high school students began their dual enrollment classes at Northwestern Michigan College last week, something not offered until the past decade.

They also have Advanced Placement classes after which they take a comprehensive tests. If successful, these students may be able to secure credits toward their degree.

It’s also important to acknowledge the dedication of our teachers and the support of our families.

The collaborative effort between educators, parents, and community members is what makes our schools truly exceptional. This year, let’s continue to support our teachers who work to inspire and educate, and let’s also engage with our students, encouraging them to take full advantage of the opportunities before them.

Leelanau County’s strength lies in its strong sense of community. This back-to-school season, let’s harness that collective spirit to foster an environment where every student feels supported and valued. From local businesses sponsoring school events to volunteers assisting in classrooms, the community’s involvement plays a crucial role in our students’ success.

So, as we begin another school year, let’s do it with optimism and a commitment to excellence. Leelanau County students are not only the leaders of tomorrow but stewards of our shared community values.

Here’s to a successful school year!
