To the editor:
Methane is the major component of natural gas. It is highly flammable and can form explosive mixtures if it concentrates in an exposed space with poor ventilation. Methane and carbon dioxide (CO2) make up the majority of landfill gas, which is produced when bacteria break down organic waste. Gas production increases if the temperatures or moisture content increases.
These gases can move in outdoor air through windows, doors or ventilation systems. In soil these gases can migrate and enter a building through cracks in basement floors and walls.
They can also enter through utility entry points, like underground water or electrical lines, sump pumps holes and floor drains.
Health effects associates with these gases result from the lack of oxygen rather than direct exposure. Symptoms of reduced oxygen include faster heart rate, reduced coordination, fatigue, nausea, vomiting and unconsciousness.
Solutions to all these waste problems degrading our air, water and soil will be address by the County Materials Management Planning (MMP) committee, (a multi-jurisdiction group formed to examine recycling of all materials).
