Local cross-country teams traveled to Buckley for the Buckley Bear Country Invitational on Saturday during the first Northwest Conference meet of the season.
Glen Lake finished third in the boy’s race and fourth in the women’s race.
Leland’s girl’s team completed the race with three medals. Leland senior Ella Knudsen finished second with a time of 19:39. Knudsen finished right behind TC St. Francis senior Betsy Skendzel who ran away with the meet.
Glen Lake freshman Carmella Julian finished sixth with a time of 20:18.
Leland freshman Sophie Grinage finished in 11th place with a time of 21:04 and sophomore Natalie Burpee finished 16th place with a time of 21:40. Glen Lake senior Emily Alaimo finished 15th with a time of 21:28.
Two personal records were set by Leland during the race by freshman Sophie Grinage and senior Alyssa Korson.
“The girls are looking forward to competing as a full team next weekend,” Leland coach Ann Knudsen said.
Glen Lake freshman Alayna Ottenbacher and Lili Migazzi were battling, finishing 28th and 31st, respectively.
A pair of Eagles flew across the finish line as seniors Cathryn Mikowski and Jacqueline Hearne finished 36th and 37th with times of 23:58 and 23:53.
Four Glen Lake girl middle schoolers finished in the top 12 of the 2-mile race as Alyse Cox (1st), Avyrie Ottenbacher (3rd), Autumn Bailey (4th), and Ellie Wright (11th).
Boys results Glen Lake senior Colebrook Sutherland finished sixth at the competitive boys race with a time of 16:01. Laker sophomore Abraham Feeney finished 11th with a time of 16:33, followed by junior Liam McCaw (16:55). All earned medals (Top 30).
Leland’s boy’s team again showed their potential for a great season. Two medals were earned by sophomore Evan Keen finishing 18th place with a time of 17:41 and freshman Carter Suttmann finishing 27th with a time of 18:09.
Glen Lake sophomore Lincoln Bailey finished 25th behind a time of 18:04.
As a team, Leland had three personal records set including freshman Campbell Fedderman with a time of 18:42, and Chase Denoyer with a time of 20:56.
“This team is comprised of three dual sport athletes whose determination and dedication to this sport fuels the energy felt when the team is together,” Knudsen said.
Glen Lake junior Dexter Martin finished 35th with a time of 18:50.
Lake Leelanau was led by Cody Couturier with a time of 18:46 for 34th place, and his teammate, sophomore Daniel Chaney finished 36th (18:59).
Glen Lakes Dean McKellar, Cason Adams, and St. Mary’s Garrick Collins finished 38th, 42nd, and 46th. St. Mary runners Anthony Grant, Cadem Brinks, Andrew Grant, Timothy Duperon, and Jacob Gulley finished the impressive race for local runners.
