Hayward Draper, the author of “The Colony: The history, families, society, architecture, and economics of a 1908 traditional American Cottage Row“ will give a presentation at Fountain Point next week.

This presentation, scheduled for 4 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 17 at Fountain Point Resort is hosted by the Leelanau Historical Society in collaboration with Fountain Point Resort.

The book presents the story of the first summer community on Lake Leelanau, the 1889 Fountain Point Resort, and then delves into the history of The Colony, a 1908 communal Cottage Row just across the lake from it. The book also captures a larger narrative of social and economic transformation throughout Michigan and across the United States, driven by the emerging vacation culture of the late 19th century. Draper as he unveils new insights and previously unexplored details about Fountain Point’s early days, offering a fresh perspective on this National Historic Site. And experience the charm of Fountain Point firsthand.

After a year as a Carnegie Teaching Fellow in History at Yale Graduate School, Draper pursued a career as a litigation attorney in Des Moines, Iowa, and later also Traverse City. He has vacationed with his family in Leelanau County since 1978 and now lives there in a new home a few houses north of The Colony. He has been a board member of the Leelanau Historical Society since 2016.
