To the editor:
I oppose SBDNL/TART’s plan to destroy the existing environment (cut 7,000+ trees; build boardwalks through wetlands; and cut into protected sand dunes then build 25’ +/- high retaining walls to hold back the dunes) at the outrageous price tag of $4 million per mile.
There are other options that SBDNL/TART could consider before they destroy the existing environment.
“... Don’t it always seem to go, that you don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone? ...” Lyrics to Big Yellow Taxi 2017 If NPS were to petition Congress to amend/revise/withdraw the “Wilderness” designation * Segment 9 could be constructed along the existing old Lake Michigan road nearer the water. Imagine riding your bike with a water view – how beautiful would that be. You’d have a “million dollar view” without costing $4 million a mile and destroying the environment.
* Years ago when segment 9 was first brought to the public attention, I saw an NPS draft for having campsites in the Wilderness Area for kayakers. Is SBDNL planning to destroy the forest, wetlands, and sand dunes area for a bike trail and then proceed to establish camping for kayakers in the Wilderness Area?
