1948 ~ 2024

Richard Dale Riker, age 75, of Allendale, Michigan, passed away unexpectedly in April 2024. He was a beloved father, husband, and friend that will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Rich was born in Ionia, Michigan, on July 12, 1948, to Edward and Esther Riker. He grew up on South Manitou Island and graduated from Leland High School in Leland, Michigan. He served his country in the U.S. Army, including a tour in Vietnam. Rich and Sue were married on June 12, 1971, and were about to celebrate 53 years together. They started their journey together in Traverse City, Michigan, and built a life and a family together in Allendale, Michigan. In his career, Rich started and operated A&R Mechanical Services for over 25 years, his successful heating, air conditioning and refrigeration business.

Aviation was always a part of Rich’s life starting with the Piper Cub airplane traveling back and forth from South Manitou Island to building a grass runway near their home in Allendale. Not only did he love flying, he was exceptional at it. Rich continued his aviation training to obtain his Private Pilot License and also his Instrument Rating, Multi Engine Rating and Commercial Pilot License. He also enjoyed sharing his love of flight with others. It was through this that he formed A&R Aviation Services, an aviation charter service. Most important to Rich was traveling with his family and their Piper airplane allowed them to explore much of the United States. From holiday trips to Florida to family trips to the Bahamas, Nova Scotia, Colorado, California and everywhere in between.

More than anything, Rich was a husband and devoted father. He loved spending time with his children, making memories through traveling together as a family, and helping them in any way he could. He was a role model and always there to offer guidance, support and encouragement no matter what challenges they faced. He was an optimist that continually helped them to see possibility in hardship and that there was always a way to overcome obstacles. In his free time, Rich also enjoyed boating, snowmobiling, and driving the Jeep around the country. Through the years, Rich and Sue spent a lot of time boating in Grand Traverse Bay, Lake Michigan and along the Gulf of Mexico in Florida. Throughout his life he was known for his love and ability to fix almost anything. Rich was also always willing to help others. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Esther; and his brother, Ronald. Rich is survived by his wife, Susan; their children, Sara and Christine (Chris); and his brother, Russell (Cindy); as well as nieces and nephews. His memory will be cherished by all who knew him.

A memorial to celebrate Rich’s life will be held for family and friends on Saturday, September 28th, at noon in Allendale. Please reach out to the family for additional details.

Memorial contributions may be made to the AOPA Foundation. Condolences may be sent online at www.mkdfuneralhome. com.
