To the editor:
If the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail is extended to County Road 651 as planned, it will truly be a trail to nowhere. The already overcrowded Good Harbor Beach has inadequate parking. Cars are scattered on both sides of the entire entrance and parked in the woods. Some are even on M22. Adding bikers to this existing mess is dangerous and going to get worse every year. If someone gets hurt or killed, is the National Park(NPS) liable?
This problem illustrates the many ways that the NPS has failed to consider the public, local infrastructure, or the natural features that it was established to protect as stated in its “Mission, Role and Purpose.” The $15 million cost estimate for just 4 more miles of trail will inevitably go up. My tax dollars, and yours, are going to pay for an unnecessary and dangerous “Trail To Nowhere”!
