Glen Lake battles Traverse City Central

The Glen Lake Tennis Team traveled to Traverse City Central High School for a tournament on Friday against TC Central, Vicksburg, and Zeeland West. Glen Lake tied powerhouse TC Central 18-18, but the trophy went to Central as Central won the head-to-head matchup with Glen Lake, 5-3.

The Glen Lake Tennis Team traveled to Traverse City Central High School for a tournament on Friday against TC Central, Vicksburg, and Zeeland West.

Glen Lake tied powerhouse TC Central 18-18, but the trophy went to Central as Central won the head-to-head matchup with Glen Lake, 5-3.

Key contributors were undefeated players Hawthorn Sutherland, Michael Houtteman and Ben Selby at second, third and fourth singles. No. 1 singles player Colebrook Sutherland went home 2-1, losing only to the best player in the north, TC Central’s Tanner Cooley.

“It’s exciting. We tied a really good team,” said Glen Lake sophomore Hawthorne Sutherland. “We look forward to playing Traverse City Saint Francis next.” The rivalry match between No. 3-ranked Glen Lake and No. 4-ranked St. Francis was played after press time.

In the other matchups, GL trounced Vicksburg 8-0 and beat Zeeland East 7-1.

The match of the day was between Glen Lake and Zeeland East’s third doubles team where Porter Martin and Will Krusel lost the first set 3-6 and came roaring back in the second set 6-2. Glen Lake jumped out to an 8-3 lead, but Zeeland East clawed their way to a 9-10 advantage. Porter Martin and Will Krusel seized the next three points to take the match.
