Leland girls basketball is heading into the 2023-24 season with their heads held high and ready to give it their all.

The Comets are looking to improve off an impressive second half of 2022-23 when Leland went 9-2.

After graduating only one senior, the Comets are looking to pick back up where they left off at the start of this season when they play Suttons Bay tonight.

“I’m super excited to see what we can do as a team together, continuing on just like last year,” Leland senior Mallory Lowe said. “It doesn’t feel real to me (being a senior). It definitely has not kicked in yet, but I’m just super excited to be a leader on the court and finish my school career strong.”

The Comets three team captains are senior Ella Seguin, Lowe, and junior Ella Knudsen.

“I’m really proud of all of us so far, even in the first two weeks and I’m really grateful to call ‘em my team and I’m excited I get to finish my year with them,” Seguin said. “We have to start with the same intensity we ended the season with last year is going to be a huge factor in our game this year and I’m really excited to do it.

All three players bring different qualities to their leadership positions including communication, organization, and making sure the team brings their best effort and energy, according to coach Ryan Knudsen.

The Comets playing style will be similar to last year as the Comets will focus on defensive pressure and offensive transition.

“The hope is that we will also become more of a complete team this season and be able to play many different styles of offense and defense,” Knudsen said.

The Comets greatest strengths is that even though they are a young team with three sophomores, five juniors, and two seniors, most of the players have been on varsity since their freshman year. Leland will be counting on the experience to benefit them right from the start of the season.
