Suttons Bay volleyball traveled to Leland and wound up getting the first win over the Comets in four years Tuesday.

The Norse screamed after every point en route to the four set win.

Leland started the game by winning the first set before the Norse took over the game and won the next three sets for a convincing victory. The win comes at a crucial time after losing to Glen Lake 4-1 Thursday.

“They’ve worked really hard this season and Leland’s one of the rivals and I don’t think we’ve beaten them at least in the four years I’ve been at Suttons Bay at the varsity level. It’s great to see them working hard in their hard work paying off,” Suttons Bay coach Olivia Dohm. “I hope it’s a good confidence booster but also to light a fire under them to keep doing their very best at practice and getting 1% better every day.”

Megan U’Ren had seven kills and 17 digs on the night followed by Leah Clarke with 11 digs and nine assists. Bekka Grant and Olivia Schmidt also provided a defensive spark with 13 and nine digs, respectively. Yasmin Alfonseca was lethal, serving with three aces.

For Leand, Abby Hicks had seven kills, 13 digs, 6 assists; Abbi Martini 5 kills; Aubrey Rousseau with 29 digs; Callie Fort 7 digs, 4 aces, 10 digs; Kally Sluiter 3 kills, 4 aces, 17 digs; Molly Roussae 2 kill, 13 assists; Sophya Sluiter 4 kills, 2 aces, 3 digs.

Leland Public Schools hosted ‘Dig Abby’ alongside the volleyball game.

Nobody within the school has a current cancer diagnosis, but they raised money for Richard Zywicki , who was in a golf cart accident that has put him in the hospital earlier this month.

The Comets hosted a silent auction and 50/50 raffle with the proceeds heading to the Zywicki family.

In 2010, Abby Gross was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Instead of doing the popular ‘Dig Pink’ volleyball games, the Comets decided to create Dig Abby to support their classmate.

“Thankfully, we don’t have anybody that has a cancer diagnosis right now in our school. So this year, we’ll be giving the proceeds to Richard Zwicky,” Leland building aide Jane Lang said.

Leland’s National Honor Society has stepped up in a huge way to raise donations. The volleyball team also raises money through bake sales and selling tickets.

“This is how we show appreciation for one another. Every year we have a great turnout and it’s something worth giving,” Lang said.

Glen Lake volleyball had a successful week with wins over Suttons Bay and Brethren on Thursday and Tuesday.

The Lakers defeated Brethren in four sets (3-1) to notch another win on the calendar.

“We started a little slow against Suttons Bay but pulled it through and the girls dug deep. They worked hard on Thursday. Same with tonight,” Glen Lake coach Stephanie Peplinski said. “We are building that teamwork and working for every ball and every point and coming together and fighting hard for the rest of the season. The focus is ending on a good note. I know we’ve got a lot of season left but they are pulling it through for each other.”

Glen Lake took the first set 25-19 then Brethren took the second set 11-25. The Lakers would seal the deal with 25-19 and 25-17 third and fourth set wins.

“If we keep this up we have a really good future ahead of us and maybe we can make it to regionals or further than that,” Glen Lake senior Peyton Brown said. “I think our communication has definitely gotten way better. We’ve been working on it for the longest time. We are slowly getting there.”

Brown led with nine kills and five digs; Andi Forton (libero) with 14 digs; Lydia Fosmore 8 digs, 20 assists and 6 aces.

Glen Lake’s morale is high during homecoming week when they face Benzie today at 7 p.m.

Glen Lake defeated Suttons Bay in four sets Thursday. Suttons Bay took the first set 25-1 before The Lakes won the next three 25-18, 25-23 and 25-22.

Flores led the team with 15 kills and Brown 11 more. Fosmore had 14 crucial digs and 22 assists. Grace Noonan led the team with 6 aces.
