The Glen Lake Tennis Team had two strong wins in advance of regionals that are scheduled for today.

Tuesday, Oct. 1 the undermanned Lakers beat Div. 4 foe Harbor Springs 7-1.

Against Harbor Springs, Glen Lake swept all singles with Bryce Cundiff filling in at Flight 4 to win 6-4, 6-1. Other key wins were at four doubles where a freshman duo of Eliott MacTavish and Levi Lamb won in a three set tiebreaker 4-6, 6-1, 10-5. Owen Pierce and Kyra Lamb moved up a flight from their normal position to earn a convincing win at three doubles 6-3, 6-1.

Glen Lake then moved on to convincingly beat a solid Traverse City West team 7-1.

It was senior night, and the team recognized five players that have played varsity since they were freshman. Number one singles player Colebrook Sutherland, number three singles player Michael Houtteman, number one doubles player Ben Romzek, number two doubles player Andrew Schopieray and number four doubles player Kyra Lamb. All seniors finished their last regular season match with a victory.

“It felt great to see everyone come to watch us seniors play for the last time.” Glen Lake senior Colebrook Sutherland said. “And for them to see how good we five seniors have become. We were a ragtag team that first year, but we are respected wherever we go, whoever we play today.”

Regionals this year will pit two of the toughest teams in the state head to head – No. 4-ranked Glen Lake against No. 3-ranked TC St. Francis.

Regionals will take place at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Middle School in Traverse City.

Other teams facing those two powerhouses are Harbor Springs, Elk Rapids and five schools from the eastern part of the state.
