Lakers beat Benzie; Eagles rally to beat Sabres

Glen Lake defeated Benzie in a Homecoming thriller Thursday 3-2.

The Lakers led impressively 25-21, 25-23 before leaving the door open for Benzie in the third and fourth sets 21-25, 20-25.

Glen Lake would take control in the fifth set to win 15-8.

Glen Lake sophomore Lydia Fosmore led with 18 digs, 31 assists and 6 aces. Laker sophomore Peyton Brown attacked all night with 17 kills.

Andi Forton was perfect, going 6-for-6 serving, and dominated defensively with 46 digs.

Lake Leelanau St. Mary (1912-3) volleyball pulled off a thrilling comeback Tuesday night, winning the final two sets to defeat TC Christian after falling behind 2-1 in the match.

TC Christian started strong, claiming the first set. The Eagles responded by winning the second set, but the Sabres took the third, putting St. Mary down 2-1.

The Eagles dug deep and fought back, winning the next two sets to secure the victory. St. Mary led an impressive comeback in the fourth set, rallying from 20-24 to win it 31-29.

St. Mary senior Cathryn Mikowski was a standout, dominating both offensively and defensively with 19 kills, nine digs and four blocks.

Another senior, Kyla Barnowski, also delivered a strong performance with six kills, 11 digs, five aces and two blocks.

“We were working harder, staying focused, and getting excited about every point,” Barnowski said. “We were focused on not getting down on ourselves, trusting each other, and talking a lot more.”

Stats: St. Mary sophomore Lydia Bramer 4 kills, 17 digs, 2 aces, 28 assists, 1 block; Maggie Ursu: 3 kills, 4 aces, 1 block; Mackenzie Schaub: 3 kills, 2 aces, 1 block; Daisy Serrano: 12 digs, 2 aces.

The Eagles played in a tournament Saturday, finishing third after losing twice to Buckley. St. Mary also faced strong teams, including Manistee and Mason County Central, in one of their final Saturday tournaments of the season.

“Honestly, my favorite part (about those tournaments) is the downtime. We have a lot of fun together as a team and bond,” Barnowski said. “We made up a dance at the last tournament. It’s a lot of fun just hanging out with the team.”

The Eagles will travel to Leland for a highly anticipated volleyball showdown on Tuesday.

“We’re gonna have to stay strong, stay out of our heads, and stay focused,” Barnowski said. “We know Leland is a good program, and they can surprise us. We always seem to not play our best against them, but I think we can beat them this year.”

Stats: Barnowski 34 kills, 28 digs, 12 aces; Mikowski 26 kills, 16 digs, 11 aces, 5 blocks; Ursu 16 kills, 18 digs, 5 aces; Schaub 11 kills, 3 aces, 2 blocks; Bramer 7 kills, 19 digs, 7 aces, 77 assists; Kaelyn Kelenske 12 digs, 5 aces.

Norse defeat Brethren, Marion

Suttons Bay took care of business against Marion on Tuesday. After leading 2-1, the Norse sealed the victory with a 25-9, 25-14, 13-25, 25-14 win.

Sophomore Ava Anderson led the Norse with 13 kills, while junior Megan U’Ren contributed 11 kills, 10 digs, and 10 aces. Junior captain Bekka Grant was a force on defense with 18 digs, and Mya Kohler and Anna Porter combined for 10 kills in the win.

Last Wednesday, Suttons Bay swept Brethren in three sets (2522, 25-21, 25-19).
